Chapter 1
1 Misleadings in Doctrine and Living
Paul 3972, an apostle 652 of Christ 5547 Jesus 2424 according 2596 to the commandment 2003 of God 2316 our Savior 4990, and of Christ 5547 Jesus 2424, {who is} our hope 1680,
2 ¶ To Timothy 5095, {my} true 1103 child 5043 in {the} faith 4102: Grace 5485, mercy 1656 {and} peace 1515 from God 2316 the Father 3962 and Christ 5547 Jesus 2424 our Lord 2962.
3 ¶ As I urged 3870 you upon my departure 4198 for Macedonia 3109, remain 4357 on at Ephesus 2181 so 2443 that you may instruct 3853 certain 5100 men 5100 not to teach 2085 strange 2085 doctrines 2085,
4 nor 3366 to pay 4337 attention 4337 to myths 3454 and endless 562 genealogies 1076, which 3748 give 3930 rise 3930 to mere speculation 1567 rather 3123 than 2228 {furthering} the administration 3622 of God 2316 which is by faith 4102.
5 But the goal 5056 of our instruction 3852 is love 26 from a pure 2513 heart 2588 and a good 18 conscience 4893 and a sincere 505 faith 4102.
6 For some 5100 men 5100, straying 795 from these 3739 things 3739, have turned 1624 aside 1624 to fruitless 3150 discussion 3150,
7 wanting 2309 to be teachers 3547 of the Law 3547, even though they do not understand 3539 either 3383 what 3739 they are saying 3004 or 3383 the matters about 4012 which 5101 they make 1226 confident 1226 assertions 1226.
8 ¶ But we know 3609 that the Law 3551 is good 2570, if 1437 one 5100 uses 5530 it lawfully 3545,
9 realizing 3609 the fact 3778 that law 3551 is not made 2749 for a righteous 1342 person 1342, but for those who are lawless 459 and rebellious 506, for the ungodly 765 and sinners 268, for the unholy 462 and profane 952, for those who kill their fathers 3970 or 2532 mothers 3389, for murderers 409
10 and immoral 4205 men 4205 and homosexuals 733 and kidnappers 405 and liars 5583 and perjurers 1965, and whatever else 2087 is contrary 480 to sound 5198 teaching 1319,
11 according 2596 to the glorious 1391 gospel 2098 of the blessed 3107 God 2316, with which 3739 I have been entrusted 4100.
12 ¶ I thank 5485 Christ 5547 Jesus 2424 our Lord 2962, who has strengthened 1743 me, because 3754 He considered 2233 me faithful 4103, putting 5087 me into service 1248,
13 even though I was formerly 4387 a blasphemer 989 and a persecutor 1376 and a violent 5197 aggressor 5197. Yet 235 I was shown 1653 mercy 1653 because 3754 I acted 4160 ignorantly 50 in unbelief 570;
14 and the grace 5485 of our Lord 2962 was more 5250 than 5250 abundant 5250, with the faith 4102 and love 26 which are {found} in Christ 5547 Jesus 2424.
15 It is a trustworthy 4103 statement 3056, deserving 514 full 3956 acceptance 594, that Christ 5547 Jesus 2424 came 2064 into the world 2889 to save 4982 sinners 268, among whom 3739 I am 1510 foremost 4413 {of all.}
16 Yet 235 for this 3778 reason 1223 I found 1653 mercy 1653, so 2443 that in me as the foremost 4413, Jesus 2424 Christ 5547 might demonstrate 1731 His perfect 537 patience 3115 as an example 5296 for those 3588 who would 3195 believe 4100 in Him for eternal 166 life 2222.
17 Now 1161 to the King 935 eternal 165, immortal 862, invisible 517, the only 3441 God 2316, {be} honor 5092 and glory 1391 forever 165 and ever 165. Amen 281.
18 ¶ This 3778 command 3852 I entrust 3908 to you, Timothy 5095, {my} son 5043, in accordance 2596 with the prophecies 4394 previously 4254 made 4254 concerning 1909 you, that by them you fight 4754 the good 2570 fight 4752,
19 keeping 2192 faith 4102 and a good 18 conscience 4893, which 3739 some 5100 have rejected 683 and suffered 3489 shipwreck 3489 in regard 4012 to their faith 4102.
20 Among these 3739 are Hymenaeus 5211 and Alexander 223, whom 3739 I have handed 3860 over 3860 to Satan 4567, so 2443 that they will be taught 3811 not to blaspheme 987.
Chapter 2
1 A Call to Prayer
First 4413 of all 3956, then 3767, I urge 3870 that entreaties 1162 {and} prayers 4335, petitions 1783 {and} thanksgivings 2169, be made 4160 on behalf 5228 of all 3956 men 444,
2 for kings 935 and all 3956 who are in authority 5247, so 2443 that we may lead 1236 a tranquil 2263 and quiet 2272 life 979 in all 3956 godliness 2150 and dignity 4587.
3 This 3778 is good 2570 and acceptable 587 in the sight 1799 of God 2316 our Savior 4990,
4 who 3739 desires 2309 all 3956 men 444 to be saved 4982 and to come 2064 to the knowledge 1922 of the truth 225.
5 For there is one 1520 God 2316, {and} one 1520 mediator 3316 also 2532 between God 2316 and men 444, {the} man 444 Christ 5547 Jesus 2424,
6 who gave 1325 Himself 1438 as a ransom 487 for all 3956, the testimony 3142 {given} at the proper 2398 time 2540.
7 For this 3739 I was appointed 5087 a preacher 2783 and an apostle 652 (I am telling 3004 the truth 225, I am not lying 5574) as a teacher 1320 of the Gentiles 1484 in faith 4102 and truth 225.
8 ¶ Therefore 3767 I want 1014 the men 435 in every 3956 place 5117 to pray 4336, lifting 1869 up holy 3741 hands 5495, without 5565 wrath 3709 and dissension 1261.
9 Women Instructed
Likewise 5615, {I want} women 1135 to adorn 2885 themselves 1438 with proper 2887 clothing 2689, modestly 127 and discreetly 4997, not with braided 4117 hair 4117 and gold 5553 or 2228 pearls 3135 or 2228 costly 4185 garments 2441,
10 but rather 235 by means 1223 of good 18 works 2041, as is proper 4241 for women 1135 making 1861 a claim 1861 to godliness 2317.
11 A woman 1135 must quietly 2271 receive 3129 instruction 3129 with entire 3956 submissiveness 5292.
12 But I do not allow 2010 a woman 1135 to teach 1321 or 3761 exercise 831 authority 831 over 831 a man 435, but to remain 1510 quiet 2271.
13 For it was Adam 76 who was first 4413 created 4111, {and} then 1534 Eve 2096.
14 And {it was} not Adam 76 {who} was deceived 538, but the woman 1135 being deceived 1818, fell 1096 into transgression 3847.
15 But {women} will be preserved 4982 through 1223 the bearing 5042 of children 5042 if 1437 they continue 3306 in faith 4102 and love 26 and sanctity 38 with self-restraint 4997.
Chapter 3
1 Overseers and Deacons
It is a trustworthy 4103 statement 3056: if 1487 any 5100 man 5100 aspires 3713 to the office 1984 of overseer 1984, it is a fine 2570 work 2041 he desires 1937 {to do.}
2 An overseer 1985, then 3767, must 1163 be above 423 reproach 423, the husband 435 of one 1520 wife 1135, temperate 3524, prudent 4998, respectable 2887, hospitable 5382, able 1317 to teach 1317,
3 not addicted 3943 to wine 3943 or 3361 pugnacious 4131, but gentle 1933, peaceable 269, free 866 from the love 866 of money 866.
4 {He must be} one who manages 4291 his own 2398 household 3624 well 2573, keeping 2192 his children 5043 under 1722 control 5292 with all 3956 dignity 4587
5 (but if 1487 a man 5100 does not know 3609 how 3609 to manage 4291 his own 2398 household 3624, how 4459 will he take 1959 care 1959 of the church 1577 of God 2316?),
6 {and} not a new 3504 convert 3504, so that he will not become conceited 5187 and fall 1706 into the condemnation 2917 incurred by the devil 1228.
7 And he must 1163 have 2192 a good 2570 reputation 3141 with those 3588 outside 1855 {the church,} so 2443 that he will not fall 1706 into reproach 3680 and the snare 3803 of the devil 1228.
8 ¶ Deacons 1249 likewise 5615 {must be} men 4586 of dignity 4586, not double-tongued 1351, or 3361 addicted 4337 to much 4183 wine 3631 or 3361 fond 146 of sordid 146 gain 146,
9 {but} holding 2192 to the mystery 3466 of the faith 4102 with a clear 2513 conscience 4893.
10 These 3778 men must also 2532 first 4413 be tested 1381; then 1534 let them serve 1247 as deacons 1247 if they are beyond 410 reproach 410.
11 Women 1135 {must} likewise 5615 {be} dignified 4586, not malicious 1228 gossips 1228, but temperate 3524, faithful 4103 in all 3956 things 3956.
12 Deacons 1249 must be husbands 435 of {only} one 1520 wife 1135, {and} good 2573 managers 4291 of {their} children 5043 and their own 2398 households 3624.
13 For those 3588 who have served 1247 well 2573 as deacons 1247 obtain 4046 for themselves 1438 a high 2570 standing 898 and great 4183 confidence 3954 in the faith 4102 that is in Christ 5547 Jesus 2424.
14 ¶ I am writing 1125 these 3778 things 3778 to you, hoping 1679 to come 2064 to you before 5035 long 5035;
15 but in case 1437 I am 1019 delayed 1019, {I write} so 2443 that you will know 3609 how 4459 one ought 1163 to conduct 390 himself in the household 3624 of God 2316, which 3748 is the church 1577 of the living 2198 God 2316, the pillar 4769 and support 1477 of the truth 225.
16 By common 3672 confession 3672, great 3173 is the mystery 3466 of godliness 2150: He who 3739 was revealed 5319 in the flesh 4561, Was vindicated 1344 in the Spirit 4151, Seen 3708 by angels 32, Proclaimed 2784 among 1722 the nations 1484, Believed 4100 on in the world 2889, Taken 353 up in glory 1391.
Chapter 4
1 Apostasy
But the Spirit 4151 explicitly 4490 says 3004 that in later 5306 times 2540 some 5100 will fall 868 away 868 from the faith 4102, paying 4337 attention 4337 to deceitful 4108 spirits 4151 and doctrines 1319 of demons 1140,
2 by means 1722 of the hypocrisy 5272 of liars 5573 seared 2741 in their own 2398 conscience 4893 as with a branding 2741 iron 2741,
3 {men} who forbid 2967 marriage 1060 {and advocate} abstaining 568 from foods 1033 which 3739 God 2316 has created 2936 to be gratefully shared 3336 in by those 3588 who believe 4103 and know 1921 the truth 225.
4 For everything 3956 created 2938 by God 2316 is good 2570, and nothing 3762 is to be rejected 579 if it is received 2983 with gratitude 2169;
5 for it is sanctified 37 by means 1223 of the word 3056 of God 2316 and prayer 1783.
6 A Good Minister's Discipline
¶ In pointing 5294 out these 3778 things 3778 to the brethren 80, you will be a good 2570 servant 1249 of Christ 5547 Jesus 2424, {constantly} nourished 1789 on the words 3056 of the faith 4102 and of the sound 2570 doctrine 1319 which 3739 you have been following 3877.
7 But have 3868 nothing 3868 to do 3868 with worldly 952 fables 3454 fit 1126 only 1126 for old 1126 women 1126. On the other 1161 hand 1161, discipline 1128 yourself 4572 for the purpose of godliness 2150;
8 for bodily 4984 discipline 1129 is only of little 3641 profit 5624, but godliness 2150 is profitable 5624 for all 3956 things 3956, since it holds 2192 promise 1860 for the present 3568 life 2222 and {also} for the {life} to come 3195.
9 It is a trustworthy 4103 statement 3056 deserving 514 full 3956 acceptance 594.
10 For it is for this 3778 we labor 2872 and strive 75, because 3754 we have fixed 1679 our hope 1679 on the living 2198 God 2316, who 3739 is the Savior 4990 of all 3956 men 444, especially 3122 of believers 4103.
11 ¶ Prescribe 3853 and teach 1321 these 3778 things 3778.
12 Let no 3367 one 3367 look 2706 down 2706 on your youthfulness 3503, but {rather} in speech 3056, conduct 391, love 26, faith 4102 {and} purity 47, show 1096 yourself an example 5179 of those 3588 who believe 4103.
13 Until 2193 I come 2064, give 4337 attention 4337 to the {public} reading 320 {of Scripture,} to exhortation 3874 and teaching 1319.
14 Do not neglect 272 the spiritual 5486 gift 5486 within 1722 you, which 3739 was bestowed 1325 on you through 1223 prophetic 4394 utterance 4394 with the laying 1936 on of hands 5495 by the presbytery 4244.
15 Take 3191 pains 3191 with these 3778 things 3778; be {absorbed} in them, so 2443 that your progress 4297 will be evident 5318 to all 3956.
16 Pay 1907 close 1907 attention 1907 to yourself 4572 and to your teaching 1319; persevere 1961 in these 846 things 846, for as you do 4160 this 3778 you will ensure 4982 salvation 4982 both 2532 for yourself 4572 and for those 3588 who hear 191 you.
Chapter 5
1 Honor Widows
Do not sharply 1969 rebuke 1969 an older 4245 man 4245, but {rather} appeal 3870 to {him} as a father 3962, {to} the younger 3501 men 3501 as brothers 80,
2 the older 4245 women 4245 as mothers 3384, {and} the younger 3501 women 4245 as sisters 79, in all 3956 purity 47.
3 ¶ Honor 5091 widows 5503 who are widows 5503 indeed 3689;
4 but if 1487 any 5100 widow 5503 has 2192 children 5043 or 2228 grandchildren 1549, they must first 4413 learn 3129 to practice 2151 piety 2151 in regard to their own 2398 family 3624 and to make 591 some return 591 to their parents 4269; for this 3778 is acceptable 587 in the sight 1799 of God 2316.
5 Now 1161 she who is a widow 5503 indeed 3689 and who has been left 3443 alone 3443, has fixed 1679 her hope 1679 on God 2316 and continues 4357 in entreaties 1162 and prayers 4335 night 3571 and day 2250.
6 But she who gives 4684 herself 4684 to wanton 4684 pleasure 4684 is dead 2348 even while she lives 2198.
7 Prescribe 3853 these 3778 things 3778 as well 2532, so 2443 that they may be above 423 reproach 423.
8 But if 1487 anyone 5100 does not provide 4306 for his own 2398, and especially 3122 for those of his household 3609, he has denied 720 the faith 4102 and is worse 5501 than an unbeliever 571.
9 ¶ A widow 5503 is to be put 2639 on the list 2639 only if she is not less 1640 than sixty 1835 years 2094 old, {having been} the wife 1135 of one 1520 man 435,
10 having 3140 a reputation 3140 for good 2570 works 2041; {and} if 1487 she has brought 5044 up children 5044, if 1487 she has shown 3580 hospitality 3580 to strangers 3580, if 1487 she has washed 3538 the saints' 40 feet 4228, if 1487 she has assisted 1884 those in distress 2346, {and} if 1487 she has devoted 1872 herself 1872 to every 3956 good 18 work 2041.
11 But refuse 3868 {to put} younger 3501 widows 5503 {on the list,} for when 3752 they feel 2691 sensual 2691 desires 2691 in disregard 2691 of Christ 5547, they want 2309 to get 1060 married 1060,
12 {thus} incurring 2192 condemnation 2917, because 3754 they have set 114 aside 114 their previous 4413 pledge 4102.
